Understanding PTSD for Veterans

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental illness that occurs in people who have experienced a traumatic event. The condition affects about 7% of Americans and is considered a natural response to trauma, such as sexual assault, physical assault, violence, or a serious accident.

Although around eight million adults suffer from PTSD, one segment of the population is severely affected by the condition. American veterans frequently witness injuries, deaths, and other life-threatening events in both combat and non-combat situations. Unfortunately, due to the intensity of the trauma, PTSD can affect veterans throughout their lives.
